Team USA's Tamer scores an equalizing goal for against Great Britain from a penalty corner.
Abby Tamer is a junior from Dexter, MI, majoring in applied exercise science. Tamer is a team captain for Michigan Field Hockey, plays the position of forward, and has recorded 17 goals and 11 assists in her 32 career starts for the team.
In 2022, Tamer was named to the Academic All-Big Ten team and was recognized as a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. She helped the team win the Big Ten Conference Championship in 2022, and in 2023, she redshirted from the team in preparation for the 2024 Summer Olympics with Team USA, thereby preserving an additional year of college athletics eligibility. This past summer, she became the first Olympian in Michigan Field Hockey history when she represented the USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She started all 5 games for Team USA, leading the team in scoring with 2 goals, which were both scored in their game against Great Britain during pool play.
Abby Tamer began her Team USA Field Hockey career in 2019, when she was named to the U-16 Women’s National Team for their Germany Tour. In January of 2023, she was named to the U.S. Women’s Senior National Team for the first time. She recorded her first cap (appearance for the team) on June 17th against the Netherlands. She has been able to travel all around the world with Team USA Field Hockey to play in international competitions, including Chile, South Africa, Ireland, Barbados, and this past summer, France. In her time with Team USA Field Hockey, she’s won 1 Gold Medal (2023 Junior Pan American Championship in Barbados), 2 Silver Medals (2024 FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers in India and 2023 Pan American Games in Chile), and 2 Bronze Medals (2022 Uniphar 5-Nations Tournament in Ireland and 2021 Junior Pan American Championship in Chile).
Tamer’s athletic prowess has been rewarded with NIL and sponsorship deals. She’s an Official Athlete of Vlack Hockey US with her own discount code for online shopping, TAMER4. Vlack is an international field hockey equipment brand which mainly operates in the United States, Argentina, Uruguay, and the European Union. She is also backed by TruFIT Customs, a company which specializes in custom-fit multi-sport mouthguards. Both of these partnerships ensure that Abby has unlimited custom access to top-of-the-line field hockey equipment, which helps her to perform at her best both for Michigan and Team USA. Finally, at the 2024 Paris Olympics with Team USA, her Instagram account (@abbytamer) promoted a digital advertising campaign led by Samsung and Intel.
Tamer described her 2024 Paris Olympics experience with Team USA Field Hockey as a dream come true. She said that hearing the sound of the whistle to signal the start of Team USA’s opening match against Argentina was one of the best moments of her entire life. However, she hopes that this summer is just the start of a lengthy career representing her country at the highest possible level. At minimum, she wants to play at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, USA, as well as the 2032 Summer Olympics in Brisbane, Australia.
